Alexandria was founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC and became the capital of Egypt under the Ptolemies, the dynasty of Cleopatra. For centuries it was one of the greatest cities of the ancient world, home to the Lighthouse of Alexandria and the famous Library. Today it is Egypt's second-largest city, with a relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere that feels very different from Cairo.

Bibliotheca Alexandrina
This modern library opened in 2002 to revive the spirit of the ancient Library of Alexandria. Its tilted, disc-shaped building faces the sea and houses reading rooms, museums and exhibitions.
Citadel of Qaitbay
Sultan Qaitbay built this fortress in the 15th century on the site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Stones from the lighthouse were reused in its walls.
Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa
This underground burial complex from the Roman period mixes Egyptian, Greek and Roman styles in a unique way. A spiral staircase leads down to tombs and halls carved into the rock.
Pompey's Pillar and the Serapeum
Despite its name, this huge granite column was erected for the Roman emperor Diocletian around AD 300. It stands among the ruins of the Serapeum, once a great temple of the god Serapis.
Kom el-Dikka Roman Theater
A small, well-preserved Roman theater with marble seats, surrounded by the remains of Roman baths and lecture halls.
The Corniche and Montazah
The seafront Corniche is perfect for a walk, fresh seafood and sunset views. At the eastern end, the gardens of Montazah Palace are a popular green escape.
How to Get to Alexandria from Cairo
Alexandria is about 220 km from Cairo. By car on the desert road the trip takes around three hours; there are also regular trains. A day trip is enough to see the highlights if you start early.
Best Time to Visit
Alexandria has a milder climate than Cairo. Spring and autumn are ideal. Summer brings many Egyptian holidaymakers to the beaches, and winter can be rainy and windy.
