Egypt Nile cruise tours are one of the most relaxing ways to see the temples of Upper Egypt. You unpack once, sail between Luxor and Aswan, and visit a new site almost every day while the river landscape slowly passes by. This guide explains the main routes and the different types of boats so you can choose the right Nile cruise.
The Classic Route: Luxor to Aswan
Almost all Nile cruises sail the 200 km stretch between Luxor and Aswan, in either direction. Typical stops are:
- Luxor: Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Hatshepsut
- Esna: the Temple of Khnum and the Esna lock
- Edfu: the Temple of Horus, the best-preserved temple in Egypt
- Kom Ombo: the double temple of Sobek and Haroeris on the river bank
- Aswan: Philae Temple, the Unfinished Obelisk and the High Dam
How Many Days Do You Need?
Cruise ships usually take 3 nights from Aswan to Luxor or 4 nights from Luxor to Aswan. Dahabiyas travel more slowly under sail and need 4 to 6 nights, which leaves time for quiet islands and villages that large ships cannot reach.
Cruise Ship, Dahabiya or Felucca?
Nile cruise ships
Large motor ships with 50 to 80 cabins, a pool on the sundeck and buffet meals. They are good value and follow fixed schedules.
Dahabiyas
Traditional sailing houseboats with only a few cabins. They offer a quiet, personal atmosphere, freshly cooked meals and stops at less-visited sites. Our Merit Dahabiya cruise from Aswan to Luxor is a good example.
Feluccas
Small wooden sailboats without an engine. A felucca trip is simple and adventurous: you sleep on deck or on an island under the stars. Our private VIP felucca journey adds a private guide and transfers.
Lake Nasser Cruises
South of Aswan, cruises on Lake Nasser visit rescued Nubian temples and end at Abu Simbel. Read more about our 5-day Lake Nasser cruise.
Best Time for a Nile Cruise
October to April has the best weather for temple visits. Summer cruises are cheaper, but days in Luxor and Aswan are very hot, so sightseeing starts at sunrise.
What Is Included?
