Cairo Travel Guide for Your Stay

Cairo cityscape along the Nile, Egypt

Cairo, the capital of Egypt, is the largest city in the Arab world, with more than 20 million people in the greater metropolitan area. It can feel overwhelming at first, but with a little planning it is an easy and rewarding city to visit. This Cairo travel guide focuses on the practical side of your stay. For the top attractions, read our guide What to See in Cairo.

Where to Stay in Cairo

  • Giza: close to the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Ideal if your focus is ancient Egypt, and many hotels have pyramid views.
  • Zamalek: a green, relaxed island in the Nile with cafés, galleries and embassies. A good base for first-time visitors.
  • Downtown: central, busy and close to the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, with historic buildings and budget hotels.
  • Garden City and the Nile Corniche: large international hotels with river views.

Getting Around Cairo

Cairo traffic is heavy at almost any time of day, so allow plenty of time between sights. Ride-hailing apps are widely used and inexpensive. The Cairo Metro is fast and cheap for central routes, and the first carriages are reserved for women. For sightseeing, a private car with driver is the most comfortable option, which is why hotel pickup is included on all our Cairo day tours.

Food to Try in Cairo

Egyptian food is simple, filling and very good value. Try koshari (rice, lentils, pasta and tomato sauce), ful medames (stewed fava beans), ta'ameya (Egyptian falafel made with fava beans), grilled kofta and fresh juice from a street stall. Finish with mint tea or Turkish coffee in a traditional café.

Best Time to Visit Cairo

October to April has the most comfortable temperatures. Summer is hot but still manageable in Cairo if you start early. During Ramadan, many sights keep shorter hours, but the evenings are especially festive.

Safety and Etiquette

The main tourist areas in Cairo are busy and well used to visitors, and tourist police are present at major sites. Watch your belongings in crowded markets, agree on prices before a service, and dress modestly, especially at mosques and churches. Keep small notes for tips.

Day Trips from Cairo

Cairo is also a great base for excursions: Memphis, Saqqara and Dahshur, Alexandria, the monasteries of Wadi El Natrun or even Luxor by plane. See all day trips from Cairo.
